When I bought my place a few years ago, it required some work to put my personal touch on it. I wanted to update the bathroom a bit by painting and replacing some of the fixtures. I wanted to replace a few doors and install some shelving. I already had a basic toolkit and went out to buy a drill set and levels. I thought I had all I need and was ready to go. I thought to myself, “How hard can all this work be?” and I got started.
You want to wear higher quality clothes. It makes an impression and we all know that first impressions are important. If you don’t have a decent suit, go out and buy one; it’ll be worth it. Wearing higher quality clothes shows that you are willing to invest in your career and your future. You are dressing for success!
You must have an open communication with your mentor. Whether they are a relative, icf singapore, leadership developer or an online career management expert, you must be willing to meet with them. Once you have identified the type of mentor you admire, set up a meeting to get to know them better. If they’re not willing to communicate with you, then you know early in the game that they will not have the time to coach you at advancing your career.
Spelling and grammatical mistakes. It seems like common sense to have your resume clean of these types of errors, yet they are still being sent to employers. Your bullet points do not have to be complete sentences, however your introduction or summary can be written in a standard paragraph format. Read your resume out loud to yourself, so that you can get a better review of your work or have someone else look at it before you print it.
Let your network know now what you are looking for and what company you want to work for. Nearly 70% of the jobs people are getting are from others in their network they know. Remind your network – either through Facebook or LinkedIn – what specific position you’re looking for and what company you are targeting. Doing it once 3 months ago is not going to help. When you are top of mind for them when they come across an opportunity, they’ll contact you.
You are pessimistic. Having a positive attitude towards your job is very important to ensure success. You may have all the great skills you need, but if you don’t have a ‘go-getter’ attitude, you will never succeed. To be successful in your chosen career, you need to have the right mindset. Optimism will allow you to stay focused on your goal against all odds.
In my effort to reply to this I noticed that I struggled to get my point across or at least to make a point that encompassed this challenge for all levels of job seekers (entry level to mid management). Finally it hit me…the question is answered by simply informing the job seeker to always prepare for upcoming interviews. You have to pre-plan, prepare, do your homework…whatever you want to call it but you have to take control of the interview by expecting this scenario to play out and having a plan of action.
It takes time and effort to write a great resume that will get an employer to call you. If you are sending out a resume with these mistakes, some are easy to fix. However, if you are one of those unfortunate individuals that have been unemployed for a long time and not doing anything, then its time to start volunteering or taking a position that may not be that dream job. Also, if you have never written a resume that is based on accomplishments and not duties, it can be a daunting task. If you need help with this task give us a call.
