These past few days have been a roller coaster of emotions. Watching the Rockies win a nail biter against Chris Carpenter to watching them lose a tough game with Ubaldo Jimenez on the mound to watching Jorge De La Rosa blow up early in yesterdays game only to have Clint Barmes make the play of the year to end it.

The bottom line from all these statistical calculations is that Social Security payments will be flat for two years in a row (2010 – 2011), even though cost of living keeps rising. In fact, you don’t need not be a math wizard to draw the conclusion that seniors and other Social Security beneficiaries can kiss COLAs goodbye for a few years. For example, if you draw a freehand, straight line through the middle of the up and down curves in a CPI line-graph, it reveals an upward slope in the CPIdata for the last 10 years. An “eye-ball” projection of that upward slope from 2011 to 2013 would show that prices are likely to increase by 4.0% per year until 2013.
Cabbage rolls are a very common food in many European countries, and are delicious. Usually, taco recipes is used, sometimes with added pork or even sausage, and combined with raw rice and seasonings of choice. This mixture is rolled into large cabbage leaves and cooked in a tomato based sauce. Cabbage can be used as a sturdier wrap, replacing lettuce for some heartier fillings. Partially cooked cabbage leaves still retain much strength and could also be used this way. Try making spring rolls using cabbage leaves.
When Cortez and his Conquistadors arrived in Mexico in 1521 from Spain, they found many different foods that they had never heard of before. Avocados, squash, chocolate, peanuts, beans, corn, vanilla, coconuts, and tomatoes were all new taste sensations to them. They also shared their bounty from Spain. Pork, lamb, beef, garlic, cheese, milk, wine, vinegar, and citrus fruits were all new to the native Mexicans. Whereas canned food is preserved by the process of canning, most kibble is preserved artificially. (Ever contemplate how many preservatives must be required to retard spoilage of food left out all day?) Kibble begins as a dry meal whereas canned food is canned fresh. Kibble is exposed to more heat than canned (destroying nutrients). Worse yet, kibble is linked to kidney and bladder problems in cats, and to bloat, a deadly problem especially for large, broad-chested dogs. It’s also dehydrating. Of course, canned isn’t perfect either. Fresh is best, raw or cooked. Next best is frozen prepared food and then dehydrated and freeze dried foods, all available at better pet stores.
The Dodgers on the other hand, let’s just hope they are in full fledged prepare-for-the-playoffs-mode. Let’s hope their starting pitchers don’t last much longer than 60 pitches and their starting position players don’t play a full game. If Joe Torre plays it safe then this might be the case, he won’t want to risk an injury just before the playoffs.
